The outstanding design of the Zencha bathroom collection by Sebastian Herkner was inspired by traditional Japanese rituals and craftsmanship and combines unusual above-counter basins with minimalistic furniture. “I started the collection Zencha with Duravit three years ago“ says the German Designer. “I was inspired by Japanese tea bowls for the sink and bathtub. Your bathroom should be the room in your house that is offline. A place to relax, recharge, and prepare for the day. Similar to a tea ceremony in Asia, what you do in the bathroom is a ritual”.
Their soft, organic shapes are abstractly recognisable in the basins, which are designed as rounded rectangles that widen at the bottom and taper at the top in a subtle curve. The materials used are just as tactile: the abovecounter basins are made of DuraCeram®, which makes it possible to create countertop bowls with an extremely thin rim. The bathtubs, on the other hand, are made from a single piece of DuraSolid® and are characterised by their pleasantly warm feel and elegant matt aesthetic.
Both products are a perfect match for the modular, geometric furniture, whose straight lines create an exciting contrast to the organically shaped ceramics and complement the collection’s subtle concept of material and colour. “We designed the storage furniture in four different finishes,” says Sebastian Herkner, “so that we could mix and match different textures that play with the senses: natural oak, black wood, white flat glass or textured black glass. I designed these products with the idea in mind that it is important for interior designers to be able to create different worlds, characters and personalities”. The Zencha collection combines delicate shapes with high-quality, sustainable materials such as PEFC-certified woods. It comes in a wide range of variants and its shapes, colors, materials, measurements, and equipment options can be individually configured for various interior design settings.
