Microcosmi, more than a simple map

Microcosmi is not simply about maps, it brings together design, technology and art in order to create beautiful and unique pieces that will never grow old. Microcosmi maps have a clean and minimal design and are all made with great attention to details.

Combining the precision of the laser cutting machine, that faithfully reproduces computer generated vector drawings, with the variability of the natural timber medium so that each piece is unique and slightly different from the others.

Designed and made in Italy Microcosmi started with two young architects – Gaia Castelli and Giorgio Della Marianna – deciding to join forces and bring together their love of design, their knowledge and their craftsmanship with the aim to create something special. Add to it the will of carrying on the wood crafting tradition of the family, dating back four generations, and the introduction of new technologies such as laser cutting.

Every Microcosmi map is designed and made in a little workshop near Milan – Italy – pouring all our knowledge and passion into it. This altogether is what makes them so special.

Product details Each Microcosmi design map is unique and made upon request.

They start from raw, open source, vector geodata, work some magic on the computer and then craft the final product with laser cut precision. This is the reason why a completely customized piece portraying any city in the world is available.

Three layers of high quality grade marine plywood show the streets grid, the land mass and the water surface and give depth to the map. The back of each map is engraved with the city name, its coordinates and a serial number.

The layers are assembled without glue and held together by the frame. A sheet of transparent high quality Evonik plexiglass protects the plywood to ensure its duration. The frame is made of Koto hardwood engraved with the Microcosmi logo on one side. The background of each map is customizable, choosing between Poplar, Mahogany and Okoume plywood.
