Italian Design Day 2020

Italian design speaks to the whole world with the voice of its protagonists: the Italian Design Day, the international programme of events promoted every year since 2017 by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Farnesina in collaboration and with the support of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism, is celebrated on 5th November 2020.
More than one hundred events all over the world – speeches by designers, critics, specialised journalists and researchers; competitions, exhibitions, presentations of design objects – are organised with the collaboration of the network of Italian Embassies, Consulates, Italian Cultural Institutes and ICE offices abroad: an effective tool for the promotion of design and for the international affirmation of a strategic sector for Italian exports.

The theme of this year’s Italian Design Day is Designing the Future. Development, innovation, sustainability, beauty: the focus is on the proactive capacity of Italian design and Made in Italy, able to conceive new development scenarios while keeping the quality of life and the protection of the planet at the centre of their objectives.
All the more topical issues in the context of the health emergency in recent months: the 2020 edition, scheduled for 25 March, had been suspended due to the Covid-19 emergency. But we wanted to bring it to completion despite everything, as a sign of vitality and support for design, a strategic resource of the country.
It is a digital edition: 97 testimonials of the Italian culture of the project are presented to the world with short speeches recorded on a website (, on a YouTube channel (Italian Design Day Official) and on an Instagram profile (italiandesignday_official). The interventions are accompanied by an introductory video entitled C’è un Mondo dietro ogni cosa. / There’s a World behind every thing, produced by OffiCine – IED+Anteo directed by Davide Fois. He collaborated with MAECI for the general organization and communication ADI Associazione per il Disegno Industriale.

On 5th November there will also be many speeches at the Italian Embassies, Consulates and Cultural Institutes. Everything is collected in a volume distributed in digital form and available for free download on the event website.
The fourth edition of Italian Design Day will be presented in Rome in a videoconference meeting attended by Lorenzo Angeloni, Director General for the Promotion of the Country System, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Manlio Di Stefano, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Anna Laura Orrico, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. This year’s theme is illustrated by Umberto Cabini, President of the ADI Foundation – Compasso d’Oro Collection.
