Located in Milan’s Porta Venezia district, Casa Maiocchi is the complete renovation of a 200 m² apartment designed by the Anglo-Italian practice Studio Cava, founded by Dominic Cava-Simmons and Chiara Greppi. Completed in 2024, the project interprets the home as a carefully calibrated spatial system.
The design begins with a redefinition of the apartment’s layout, with the aim of achieving a balance between openness and enclosure, between solid and void. Through a thoughtful reorganization of proportions and connections between rooms, the domestic space has been reimagined to encourage a smoother flow of movement and an increase in natural light.
Once the layout was established, the project evolved through a process of progressive refinement involving materials, finishes, and furnishings. Studio Cava guided the clients through every design decision, including the development of several bespoke elements integrated into the architecture. Among these, the marble-clad fireplace stands out as a sculptural feature and visual focal point of the living area, embodying the studio’s ability to combine material elegance with compositional precision.
The entrance immediately introduces the character of the home through a dialogue between refined materials and decorative references. Marble and wallpaper define a space with a strong visual identity that reflects the owners’ sophisticated taste while blending naturally with the building’s historic architectural context.
A key aspect of the project lies in the recovery and reinterpretation of existing furniture. Several antique pieces were restored and reimagined through new colours and contemporary details, contributing to a domestic environment where past and present coexist with elegance. This approach, which the studio refers to as reclaim, enhances the memory of objects while integrating them into an updated, sustainable, and personal narrative of living.
The result is a home with timeless charm, where architectural design, bespoke furniture, and meticulous attention to detail come together to create a truly distinctive living environment.
