Construction has officially begun on Bosco della Musica, the new campus of the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi di Milano in the Rogoredo area of Milan. Designed by the international architecture studio Settanta7, winner of the 2022 competition, the project marks the start of a major cultural and urban regeneration initiative in the south-east of the city.
Conceived as a multifunctional music campus, the development forms part of a broader redevelopment strategy for the district. Alongside the refurbishment of the historic Ex Chimici building, the plan includes the construction of four new buildings dedicated to education, student housing and public activities, as well as an outdoor summer arena for concerts.
With an investment of €61.6 million, Bosco della Musica aims to become Italy’s first open conservatory campus, expanding the educational offer of the Milan Conservatory with programs focused on rock, jazz, pop and electronic music, while the historic headquarters in central Milan will continue to host classical music studies.
The architectural concept draws inspiration from the organic forms of leaves in a forest, translated into curved volumes arranged as if scattered by the wind. The buildings are designed to generate fluid connections between interior and exterior spaces, while stepped terraces create areas for social interaction and relaxation within a landscaped park.
The campus will include several key facilities: a 400-seat auditorium, conceived as the symbolic core of the project and clad in ceramic shingles in seven different colors; a 200-bed student residence; the renovated Ex Chimici building hosting the school of rock, pop and jazz; and a multifunctional building dedicated to electronic and experimental music, including shared spaces, a café and a restaurant.
Sustainability and technological integration play a central role in the design. The engineering systems, developed with STAIN Engineering, will transform the complex into a smart campus, using digital monitoring to optimize energy consumption in real time. Special attention has also been given to acoustic comfort, with low-noise HVAC systems and radiant technologies designed to ensure optimal environmental conditions without interfering with musical activities.
More than a new educational facility, Bosco della Musica is intended as a cultural catalyst for urban regeneration, reinforcing the role of music and public space as tools for social cohesion and community engagement in the Rogoredo district.
