A Silent Dialogue with the Garda Landscape

Overlooking the shores of Lake Garda, Casa GZ is situated in a densely built-up context, yet one rich in natural beauty. The intervention, designed by the Brescia-based studio aa-ls, was conceived with the aim of establishing a direct and continuous relationship with the landscape, transforming the residence into a sensitive device attuned to the territory and its rhythms.

Located within a grid of single-family villas arranged in a checkerboard pattern, the house assumes a discreet but determined role, seeking a balance between formal rigor and openness to the natural context. The distribution layout is articulated across three levels: the ground floor houses the living room, kitchen, and service areas; the basement features a wellness area with a spa and wine cellar; while the first floor is dedicated to the master sleeping area. Each space is designed to maximize the view and the visual connection with the lake, thanks to large openings that create a link between the interior and exterior.

One of the project’s defining elements is the travertine cladding, chosen not only for its material value but also for its ability to root the building to the ground, harmonizing it with the colors of the Garda landscape. The result is a pure and compact volume that relates to the place through a measured, almost silent presence, yet one capable of asserting a strong and coherent architectural identity.

In a context often marked by invasive interventions, the project chooses the path of subtraction and balance. Casa GZ interprets contemporary living as a process of mediation between the built space and the natural landscape.

The aa-ls studio, based in Brescia, is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach oriented towards design experimentation. Founded by Luigi Serboli and joined by Franco Manzati, the studio works at various scales with a particular focus on environmental sustainability, developing high-performance and low-impact buildings through certified protocols. The pursuit of a balance between aesthetics, technique, and durability guides every phase of their work, from conception to realization.
