Typo, born from the encounter between Mara and AMDL CIRCLE, represents a dynamic chair full of harmonious contrasts, the result of calibrated technical experimentation capable of redefining the archetype of the wheeled office chair.
For the first time, the company collaborates with AMDL CIRCLE, the studio founded by Michele De Lucchi: from this union emerges the drive to “attempt the new”, to find new forms with which design can promote well-being and generate evolution. Typo is characterised by a dynamic silhouette, a synthesis of contrasts, not only in terms of lines but also in terms of materials, where wood, AMDL CIRCLE’s favourite material, meets metal, part of Mara’s DNA, whose solidity and malleability has over the years become a challenge to which the company responds with great skill. Two materials that not only have a strong identity, but are also extremely sustainable and recyclable at the end of their lives.
It is precisely in the metal structure that the focal point and characteristic of Typo’s design lies.
Starting from the study of the bending techniques of steel profiles, an unconventional process was developed that is able to give an unprecedented effect: by bending a steel tube with a square cross-section along the diagonal, the material is deformed, curling and draping sharp folds. This generates a detail, almost an ‘error’, both intentional and refined, which is the soul of the project.
“By making mistakes you learn, as they rightly say, and you do not suffer the paralysis of those who are afraid to try something new and wait uselessly until they know how to swim before entering the water”. In these words by Michele De Lucchi lies the key to understanding the design from which Typo was born, as a typing error, almost an accidental mistake. Instead, the nature of this piece of furniture is the result of calibrated experimentation, and what might appear at first glance as a flaw is actually the distinctive feature of its design.
“A mistake, which together with Mara – with whom we share a constant drive for innovation – we managed to make controlled, through careful refinement of the technique that generates it, in order to guarantee mass production of the object,” says the AMDL CIRCLE project team.
Playing on material contrasts, a soft, textile detail has been inserted, a regenerated cotton webbing that protrudes from the structure, as a characterising but even more functional subtlety: thanks to this hook, connected to a mechanism inserted in the square tube, it is in fact possible to adjust the height of the backrest.
Thanks to these aesthetic, material and design characteristics, the Typo collection – available in chair and stool versions – lends itself to furnishing a multiplicity of contexts: the office world, where it fits in with functionality and ergonomics; the heterogeneous hospitality dimension, to which it is aligned through extreme versatility and original appeal; and residential contexts, increasingly open to hybrid and dynamic design. Typo thus becomes a place for work, but also for meeting and conviviality, even relaxation.
This stimulating collaboration with AMDL CIRCLE represented for Mara an important opportunity for research and innovation, but also for comparison and relationship, which allowed the brand to broaden its design perspectives and achieve surprising results.
The Salone del Mobile 2024 will offer the opportunity to discover the special Limited Edition of the collection realised in collaboration with Alpi Wood. Typo is presented in three models made of three different Alpi woods: Alpi Sottsass Grey, Alpi Arcobaleno designed by Konstantin Grcic, and Alpi Wavy Fir Blue by Raw Edges.
