Toronto-based architectural photography duo of doublespace photography = Amanda + Younes recently scooped the Architizer A+ Awards 2020 in the Photography and Video category. Doublespace won both the jury and popular vote awards for their photographs of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple’s Horizon Neighbourhood.
Horizon is a project by esteemed Canadian architectural firm MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple and is the first pre-planned neighbourhood to be built 9,000 feet above sea level on Powder Mountain, Utah.
Commissioned as a base for Summit Series, an ambitious conference programme that attracts a community of innovators and social impact investors from a wide range of sectors, this new village is an architectural expression of Summit’s values of community building, climate responsiveness and land stewardship.
The structure consists of 30 cabins ranging in size from 300 to 900 square metres The modest cabins at MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple are in contrast to the excessive architecture that has become typical of Mountain West resorts.
This is MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple’s first completed project of many currently under construction in the US, following the opening of a satellite studio in Denver last year. The firm is known for drawing on regional building practices and material culture, as well as looking to the local climate and landscape, to create responsive contemporary architecture that expresses archetypal qualities and universal resonance.
