Urban Connections: art and urban regeneration in Rome

At the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, Urban Connections takes shape, a competition promoted by the museum together with Techbau, exploring the role of contemporary art within processes of urban regeneration. The initiative unfolds within a broader transformation affecting the area around Roma San Pietro railway station, one of the city’s historic mobility nodes.

The competition was conceived with the aim of engaging young artists in reinterpreting an urban space that for a long time had remained in a condition of suspension. Located just a short distance from the Vatican and crossed daily by thousands of commuters, the area is now undergoing a process of renewal intended to restore urban continuity, services, and new forms of interaction between architecture, public space, and infrastructure.

Within this framework, the regeneration project along via del Crocifisso is taking shape, where a new multifunctional building designed by Mario Cucinella Architects and developed by Techbau will soon be completed. The project will host a student residence, commercial spaces, green areas, and venues dedicated to public events, configuring an integrated urban ecosystem designed to reactivate a strategic part of the city. The development also follows sustainability principles aligned with ESG standards and aims to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification.

In this context, the Urban Connections competition introduces contemporary art as a structural component of the regeneration process. Artists were invited to engage with a particularly significant architectural element: a massive wall measuring 145 meters in length and 10 meters in height that separates the new building from the railway line. From a simple infrastructural barrier, this surface has been reimagined as a narrative device capable of hosting a permanent artwork, destined to become part of the urban landscape.

The final event, held at the GNAMC on January 28, 2026, marked the culmination of the initiative. During the event, the ten finalist projects selected by the jury were presented and the winning proposal was announced. The selected artwork will be realized within the via del Crocifisso complex, becoming a permanent component of the site. The finalist projects are also exhibited in a public exhibition open until February 8, offering the city an opportunity to explore the dialogue between art, architecture, and public space.

The competition therefore contributes to a broader reflection on the contemporary city and on the role that artistic practices can play in urban transformation. In dialogue with the architecture and the public functions of the new building, the selected artwork will transform a former element of separation into a space of connection, restoring to this infrastructural wall a collective and civic dimension.

Through the collaboration between cultural institutions, architects, and private stakeholders, Urban Connections proposes a model in which art and architecture jointly contribute to shaping a renewed urban landscape. A process that interprets regeneration not only as the physical transformation of space, but also as an opportunity to activate new social, cultural, and symbolic connections in the heart of the city.
