The second edition of the Biennale dello Stretto 2024

The Biennale dello Stretto returns in 2024 with its second edition, promising an intense and multidisciplinary cultural experience. This event, which will take place from September 18 to December 14 across Campo Calabro, Reggio Calabria, and Messina, is directed by Mariangela Cama, Alfonso Femia, and Francesca Moraci. The Biennale is centered around the themes “The Three Water Lines” and “The Cities of the Future“, weaving together architecture, art, anthropology, landscape, writing, video, and photography.

The Biennale dello Stretto was born from the initiative of the benefit company 500×100, founded by architect Alfonso Femia, who has been leading the research project “Invisible Mediterraneans” since 2018. This work led to the first edition of the Biennale in 2022, which achieved great success thanks to the participation of numerous experts and the involvement of a broad international community.

For the 2024 edition, the Biennale is supported by 500×100 sb, the Orders of Architects of Reggio Calabria and Messina, the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, and the University of Messina, in collaboration with ANCE Reggio Calabria, along with numerous public and private institutions. This network of collaborations highlights the inclusive and shared nature of the project.

The central themes of the 2024 Biennale are two: “The Three Water Lines” and “The Cities of the Future.” The first theme, reiterated from the previous edition, reflects on the strategic importance of water in the urban context. The second theme explores the prospects of future cities, focusing on public spaces, urban mobility, infrastructure, living and care, schools, and cultural centers. This approach aims to promote design and process innovation.

The Biennale dello Stretto 2024 aims to be a platform for discussion and debate, with a series of talks and debates to be held in Reggio Calabria, Messina, and Campo Calabro. These meetings will feature authoritative voices from the international scene, discussing architecture, cities, and landscapes, seeking to bridge the gap between desire and reality, vision and projection.

One of the main events of the Biennale will be the exhibition at Forte Batteria Siacci in Campo Calabro. This exhibition space, with over ten thousand square meters of surface area, will host projects collected through an international Call to Action and various contests dedicated to young architects, designers, anthropologists, and artists under 35. The Fort, built between 1894 and 1898, represents a symbolic place that dominates the Strait of Messina, making the invisible visible.

The Biennale dello Stretto is not just an exhibition event but a real laboratory of ideas and projects looking towards the future. With its multidisciplinary nature and the ability to involve a vast international community, the Biennale stands as an important reference point for the debate on urban transformations and the challenges of our time.

The 2024 edition of the Biennale dello Stretto is therefore announced as an unmissable event for anyone interested in architecture, art, and the culture of the Mediterranean, with particular attention to sustainability, innovation, and the sharing of knowledge.
