Schlüter-Systems were chosen by the CASATI ARCHITECTURE studio for a special project involving the redevelopment, securing and fitting out of a terrace open to the public in a building in the centre of Peccioli. Peccioli is a Tuscan municipality of about 5,000 inhabitants in the province of Pisa, overlooking the valley of the river Era, ALTA VALDERA. Since 1997, thanks to the innovative idea of the mayor Renzo Macelloni, a particularly problematic area of the municipality, occupied by a small landfill, has been transformed into an opportunity for the entire community, giving rise to places for participatory democracy. This is how the ‘Sistema Peccioli’ project was born, generating social cohesion, environmental protection, employment, infrastructure and wealth for the entire community.
It is at this juncture that Studio Casati Architetture’s project for the public terrace, which has been completely restructured in order to return to being a place at the service of the community, is located. Due to the presence of rooms underneath, the terrace represents a flat roof, which is why the various steps were carefully planned and implemented. First, primary waterproofing – sealing element – was carried out on a sloping screed – bituminous sheathing. A protection and drainage layer was then placed over the sealing element using Schlüter®-TROBA PLUS sheathing, followed by the screed and waterproofing of the installation substrate using Schlüter®-DITRA – with waterproofing – desolidarisation – vapour pressure compensation and load distribution functions. Finally, the time came for the installation of the floor covering, into which the expansion joints Schlüter®-DILEX-BWB – declared expansion +/- 2.5 mm) were inserted. Schlüter®-BARA-RT profile was chosen to clad the open side of the stratigraphy downstream of the terrace slope, which “accompanies” the surface water runoff to the handmade gutter channel.
The terrace was inserted in the context of the renovation of Peccioli and with the patronage of “PECCIOLI PER” welcomed a work of art, included in the MACCA – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea a cielo aperta – by the artists Prof. Maria PERBELLINI – Christian PONGRATZ with Dustin WHITE – CRISPR Locus 2023.
