Living the alpine tradition between wood and landscape

A few steps from Lake Carezza, one of the most enchanting corners of South Tyrol, stands haus carezza, the latest project by monovolume architecture + design, a studio led by Patrik Pedó and Jury Pobitzer. Set within a rare natural landscape of breathtaking beauty, amidst larch forests and the peaks of Latemar, the two new residences engage with the theme of alpine living, reinterpreting traditional forms and materials through a measured and contemporary architectural language.

The intervention stands out for the clarity of its volumetric composition and careful integration into the Dolomite landscape. The two units, formally distinct but morphologically similar, are embedded into the slope by leveraging the site’s topography to ensure privileged views and a dynamic internal arrangement. The building is articulated across three staggered levels, ensuring visual continuity and dialogue with the landscape, with a south-facing living area open towards the Latemar range and more private, sheltered spaces to the north.

The exterior cladding in fir wood and the base in Dolomite stone establish a clear material hierarchy: the former light and tactile, the latter solid and rooted. The asymmetrical roof, with its inclined and fragmented lines, ideally recalls the jagged morphology of the surrounding peaks. The south facade, almost entirely glazed, allows natural light to flood the interior spaces and creates a direct continuity between inside and outside, emphasizing the visual and emotional connection with nature.

On the northern front, instead, a protective enclosure prevails: wooden slats and recessed terraces ensure privacy from the built environment, demonstrating a conscious balance between openness and protection. Inside, the design favors natural materials and minimalist finishes: wood dominates the spaces, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere in line with the alpine imagery, yet maintaining the sobriety of a minimalist aesthetic.

Haus carezza reflects the approach of the South Tyrolean studio, which has always been attentive to combining construction tradition, contemporary technologies, and environmental sustainability. The project enhances the landscape, interprets it, and protects it, offering a new way to experience the mountains—through silence, light, and material.
