Home for a researcher

Like a haute couture garment, the design of Casa Carracci is tailored to the needs of its client, a young university researcher, and conceived as a space where light, material, and form merge into a fluid and sculptural continuum. The project, designed by Volume Atelier, the studio founded by Flavio Graviglia, stems from an architectural approach that blends theoretical experimentation with design practice, placing the sensory experience of living at its core.

The interior layout unfolds along three main axes connecting the living room, entrance, and kitchen, avoiding rigid compartmentalization in favor of a seamless spatial perception. A distinctive feature of the project is the curvilinear design of the walls, which generates unexpected perspectives and visually connects the different functional areas of the home. Moving away from the traditional segmentation of domestic space, the intervention proposes a unified environment where functions interweave without barriers.

Marking the transition between the collective and private dimensions is an arch—the only threshold element in the apartment—which takes on a symbolic role in separating the living area from the sleeping quarters. The choice of materials was guided by an emphasis on texture and interaction with natural light. The custom-designed kitchen is made of Carrara marble, a material with strong expressive value, while an exposed reinforced concrete beam was restored to its original texture, enhancing its sculptural quality. The ceilings, painted in soft neutral tones, and the custom-made wooden furnishings—integrated into the wall thickness—help to create an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere.

Situated on the fifth floor of a historic building along Via Flaminia, the apartment enjoys an east-west exposure, allowing natural light to flow through the interiors and transform the perception of space throughout the day. The curvilinear walls amplify this luminous dynamic, diffusing light in varying intensities and enhancing the plasticity of the overall composition. A space that becomes a landscape, an environment shaped by the needs of its inhabitant, delivering a truly bespoke living experience.
