A yellow that tells the space

Located between Via Casilina and the residential area of the small villas, Casa Zurla is situated within a three-story building, once the headquarters of a cooperative and now converted into a private residence. Designed by the Roman studio dc+f architettura, the project explores the relationship between solid and void, light and shadow, interior and exterior, creating an architectural language that prioritizes expressive simplicity and spatial quality.

The project concerns a 120 sqm apartment, enhanced by a 50 sqm terrace at level, and is conceived as a work of spatial rationalization, where the search for balance between aesthetics and functionality guides every design choice. The heart of the home is marked by the presence of a vibrant yellow that runs through the spaces like a common thread, introducing an element of energy that breaks the material neutrality.

The warm, strong tone emerges not simply as a decorative accent, but as a design tool that directs the gaze and shapes the internal geometries. The alternation between solids and voids is emphasized, molding volumes and highlighting the essential geometries of the project. The interior spaces are characterized by a balance between intimacy and openness, with rooms that interact through visual glimpses and changes in height, creating a dynamic and layered domestic experience.

The choice of materials underscores and amplifies the distribution logic: the ceramic tiles in the service areas interact with the warmth of the parquet used in the living area and bedrooms, creating a clear balance between functionality and comfort. Further defining the transitions between spaces is the custom-designed furniture, a key element of the studio’s design philosophy.

The result is a project that celebrates attention to detail, enhancing the memory of the place and interpreting it through a contemporary architectural language, where material, light, and color construct a dynamic, functional environment that is deeply rooted in the urban context in which it is set.
