Between the shore. A new concept for Heytea

The new Heytea store, titled “Between the Shore,” draws inspiration from the rich history of oyster farming in Shajing, a district with a centuries-old tradition known as “the oyster hometown of China.” The design concept explores the natural beauty and contrasts found in oyster shells, a vision reflected in every corner of this carefully designed space by Q&A Studio.

Shajing, an area dating back to the Ming dynasty, has been recognized as the capital of oyster farming in China, and it is this tradition that inspired the aesthetic conception of the store. The choice of materials plays a key role in this project: soft stone materials, characterized by a rough and natural texture, were selected to cover various elements of the space, including the bar, columns, and ceiling.

These materials create organic layers that give the store a sculptural quality, reminiscent of the layered structure of oyster shells. The continuity of these materials across different surfaces provides a sense of unity and flow, making the space feel both natural and artistic. To further enhance the theme, shell-glazed tiles are used, creating a shimmering effect similar to the iridescence found inside an oyster shell.

Lighting is another essential element of the design, particularly the globular fixtures placed in the ceiling corners, which evoke pearls—hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. This thoughtful integration of materials and light creates a dynamic environment where customers are invited to explore and experience the space in an engaging and sensory way.

The “Between the Shore” concept not only honors Shajing’s cultural heritage but also represents Heytea’s commitment to innovation and design excellence. This store stands as a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity, offering a unique and immersive experience that speaks to both the past and the present. The organic layers created by the soft stone materials give the space a fluid, almost geological feel, as if the store had naturally emerged from the earth—a place where history and modernity meet in perfect balance.
