The Chinese ideogram 迎 is read Yíng and literally means “welcome”. This is the name Steve Leung has chosen for the collection of doors designed for Lualdi, as a tribute to the culture of welcome acknowledged to the Italian people.
The upper part of the door emphasises the flexibility of the design and the ability to adapt to different interior contexts, thanks to a wide range of colours and finishes. Steve Leung draws inspiration from the rich symbolism of colours typical of Chinese tradition: he chooses the palette of red, the colour of happiness and good fortune, a brighter shade close to yellow, symbol of imperial virtue, or black, for a more discreet taste. For Leung, the coloured door represents the cultural heritage of a distant tradition in which the colour of the entrance was the social recognition of ancient Chinese families.
Lualdi therefore presents a complete range, featuring leather finishes, lacquered models and wooden proposals, for a versatile and timeless product.
The lower part of the door is the result of an elaborate woodworking process inspired by the ancient traditional Chinese technique known as sǔn mǎo (榫卯). Characterised by a surface with geometric carvings, the door base is always in mocha oak and enhances the two sides, which come in a canaletto walnut finish for the wooden or lacquered doors and in a bronze-coloured metallic finish for the leather models.
Yíng perfectly blends Italian know-how, recognised the world over, with an aesthetic inspired by China’s historic heritage, revealing a continuum between tradition and modernity, craft techniques and industrial solutions, design and timeless elegance.
