The city on the water. Photos of reflected architecture

On Tuesday 8th October 2024, the Milan Civic Aquarium presents the exhibition ”The city on the water. Photos of reflected architecture” by artist Giancarlo Leone, promoted by the City of Milan Culture and the Milan Civic Aquarium and curated by Luta Bettonica.

For years, Giancarlo Leone – an architect – has been carrying out research into the quality of life in urban contexts. According to the architect, the city is no longer polis or civitas but has become a cohabitation, a collection of people indifferent to each other living in the same place, regulated by relationships based on money. People therefore live in a fake urban order, devoid of sharing, which is ill matched by the poetry of their hearts.

Within this pessimistic vision, there is, however, a ‘City Elsewhere’, situated along urban waters, where everything flows at the right speed. A place where architecture is reflected through the silent movement of the waters, restoring pauses of urban quality to the community.
Reflections that, at times, recall a watercolour, an oil, a pointillist painting, or a reference to Sironi, bringing the anima urbis back to the art of living.
