Studio Benaim: horizontal architecture in the project for Fattoria Le Pupille

Architecture, when engaging with a productive landscape, can assume the very rhythm of the land, transforming agricultural order into a spatial principle. In the project by Studio Benaim for Fattoria Le Pupille in Maremma, this correspondence takes shape in a built system that echoes and interprets the logic of vineyard rows that structure the surrounding terrain, just as the building’s walls articulate the internal spaces.

The building follows the linearity of the vineyards, configuring itself as a device that engages in dialogue with the surrounding vegetation without overpowering it. The decision to develop the volume on a single level reinforces this intention of integration, avoiding vertical prominence and favoring a horizontal relationship with the landscape. Materials contribute to this strategy: walls clad in local stone and color palettes that recall the tones of the earth anchor the intervention within its context, establishing both material and visual continuity.

This compositional structure introduces a principle of continuity between interior and exterior, where the rhythm of architecture aligns with that of the agricultural landscape. Large glazed surfaces amplify this relationship, framing constant views of the territory and transforming interiors into observation devices, where production becomes a perceptual experience.

The entrance unfolds along a path that runs alongside the first of five walls, leading into a clear and legible distribution: direct sales on one side, offices on the other. At the center lies a distribution space dedicated to the promotion of the company’s products, organized around a square courtyard. This central void becomes the focal point of the project, emphasized by a circular opening in the roof that introduces variable zenithal light, establishing a direct relationship with the sky and atmospheric conditions.

The functional sequence develops linearly: from the tasting room to service areas and finally to operational and executive offices. On the opposite side, a staff canteen with kitchen and management spaces are located, connected to the offices through continuous internal paths. At the rear, three paved outdoor areas extend the workspace into a more informal dimension immersed in greenery.

The building thus emerges as an integrated system in which architecture and landscape do not overlap but co-construct one another, shaping a space that does not merely represent production but adopts its underlying logic. Just as wine is the result of a slow transformation of matter, of sedimented time and of a precise relationship between soil, climate, and human action, architecture here is conceived as a process—a structure that receives, interprets, and returns the character of the place.
