This year marks the 32nd edition of the annual monumental sculpture exhibition at Castel Pergine, promoted by the Fondazione CastelPergine ETS and curated by art critic Dora Bulart. The initiative proposes itself as an important appointment in the artistic and cultural panorama, with the aim of enhancing contemporary Italian sculpture and creating an evocative dialogue between art, architecture and landscape, in a historical and landscape context of great impact.
The protagonist of this edition is Francesco Panceri, a well-known artist from Cremasque, invited to create an exhibition designed to dialogue with the architecture and landscape of the castle. The result is ‘SPAZIOTEMPO’, an exhibition that takes the public on an immersive journey through matter, form and void, in search of that inexpressible relationship between space and time.
‘The relationship between space and time is at the heart of my poetics,’ explains Francesco Panceri. ‘Mechanical resistance and oxidation become metaphors of change and transformation, while the layering and combination of different materials become the means to represent the balance between passion and reason, the paradigm of the human condition’.
Space and time, past and present, matter and void, are thus the elements that animate the fifteen sculptural works in iron and Trentino granite, created especially for the exhibition and placed in the park of CastelPergine. The fifteen sculptures outside are accompanied by and, in some way, refer to the fifteen paintings and installations located inside the castle, set up in four different rooms.
One of the most impressive works in the exhibition is “Geometric Rebel”, a six-metre high Corten steel sculpture placed on the castle’s main tower. An emblem of tension, resistance and connection, the work reflects on the delicate balance between strength and uncertainty, permanence and transformation.
Opposite the façade of the historic building stands “Gateway to the Stars”, a monumental sculpture measuring four metres on each side, which takes the form of a symbolic gateway to infinity. This work becomes a privileged point of observation, inviting the viewer to question time, space and the invisible. With this work, which represents a new perspective, a different point of view, Francesco Panceri transforms the vault of heaven into a sacred and cognitive space, where the earthly landscape merges with the mystery of the cosmos. The Gateway to the Stars can open up to the viewer as an aesthetic and contemplative experience capable of awakening the ancestral human desire to look beyond, towards the stars.
Dora Bulart, art critic and curator of the exhibition, identifies the works’ ability to explore relativity through the creation of experiences. The curator comments: “Spaziotempo is an existential and relational condition, where past and present intertwine and whisper verses made of mechanical and industrial elements. A place, where magma crystallised in granite, embraces the rust of iron and dresses itself in sky. The castle becomes a sculpture, a mechanism-organism of thoughts, sensations and beauty, a traveller crossing time and space touching eternity“.
SPAZIOTEMPO will be open to visitors free of charge until 5 November every day from 10 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, various on-site events and conferences on the topics of art, urban landscape and poetry will be held throughout the exhibition period.
