Reflex and Pininfarina: a story of design in constant evolution

The partnership between Pininfarina and Reflex spans almost thirty years of Italian design and continues to evolve, bringing together Pininfarina’s design culture with Reflex’s research into materials, glass craftsmanship and contemporary furniture.

The collaboration stems from the encounter between two distinct yet complementary identities. Founded in Veneto in 1989, Reflex has developed its design language from the region’s glassmaking tradition, combining Murano glass with materials such as marble, metal and wood, as well as craftsmanship and advanced technological processes. Pininfarina, meanwhile, has progressively transferred the design culture it developed in the mobility sector to product design, architecture, interiors and yachting.

One of the most significant chapters in this journey is Segno, a collection designed by Pininfarina that applies its distinctive design language to a variety of furniture types. The collection includes the Segno Sofa Lounge, Segno 72 table and Segno Sofa Wood, among others. These are complemented by pieces such as the Stratum Sofa, whose layered construction creates two different seating depths, as well as the Vela Chair and Nido Chair, the latter distinguished by a steel handle on the back featuring the Pininfarina logo.

In 2025, the partnership entered a new chapter with Orizzonte, a modular collection conceived to transcend the conventional distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The project began with a modular sofa, whose individual units can be used independently or combined in different configurations, and a table adaptable to a range of sizes and shapes. Both are characterised by a horizontal line that visually divides the volumes while serving both an aesthetic and functional purpose: in the sofa, for example, wooden inserts can be incorporated into this feature and used as raised side tables or as connecting elements between modules.

This distinctive feature becomes the common thread linking the two new products presented during Milan Design Week 2026. The Orizzonte Bed brings the collection’s philosophy into the bedroom, with manually reclining backrests and wooden accessories that can be inserted into the horizontal opening running across the product.

With the Orizzonte Sunbed, the project moves decisively into the outdoor and yachting worlds. The sunbed features soft, organic volumes, described as “pebble-shaped”, once again crossed by the distinctive horizontal line, which visually lightens the upholstered volume while discreetly integrating technical components. Its connection with the nautical world emerges both from its suitability for decks and large yachts and from details inspired by the storage compartments typically found on boats.

The project also revisits one of the most recognisable references in Pininfarina’s history: the Ferrari Modulo, the iconic concept car from the 1970s. Rather than being translated literally into furniture, its influence can be seen in the symmetry of the volumes, the purity of the surfaces and the precise line running across the object, transferring principles of automotive aerodynamics and volumetric research into furniture design.

At the same time, Orizzonte forms part of a broader product history in which experimentation with glass has become one of Reflex’s defining features. Among its most representative pieces are Laguna 72, a table made from fused glass and shaped by hand by a master glassmaker, making every piece unique; Casanova 72, with Murano glass legs and numerous configuration options; and Corallo 72, whose base is composed of transparent Murano glass elements and can incorporate integrated LED lighting.

With the expansion of Orizzonte, Reflex and Pininfarina continue a journey that is moving beyond the more traditional realm of interior design towards a more fluid concept of living. Indoor, outdoor and yachting environments become part of a single design system in which modularity, customisation, comfort and formal continuity allow the furniture to adapt to different contexts while retaining the distinctive identity the two companies have built together over time.
