The perception is that of a space expanding and transforming, where the interior flows seamlessly into the exterior, generating a surprising continuum of living. In Rome’s Villa Fiorelli district, the studio Loto Ad Project led by architect Giorgia Dennerlein has reimagined a small penthouse, turning it into a dwelling that doubles its dimension through the dialogue between living area and outdoor space.
At the heart of the project is the south-facing terrace, now covered by an automated pergola in glass and fabric that makes it habitable all year round. This space becomes the natural extension of the living area, designed with the same care as an interior: an oak wood outdoor kitchen, a tropical green corner, and bespoke furnishings endow the house with a new spatial quality.
Inside, oak orchestrates functions and settings: a bookcase carved into the side of the kitchen counter, an entrance shaped as a wooden cube, a pass-through hidden within a platform. Mirrors, scattered in different shapes and dimensions, multiply light and depth, while natural fabrics and wallpapers envelop the rooms in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. The chromatic palette intertwines green and terracotta, a reference to the neighborhood and a guiding thread between interior and exterior.
The bedroom strengthens the connection with the landscape through a wallpaper simulating a glazed opening, while Carlo d’Orta’s photographs dedicated to the façades of the EUR district offer an unprecedented image of the city, suspended between abstraction and recognizability. Outdoors, the urban silence gives way to an open domestic scenario. At Villa Fiorelli, the terrace becomes a scenographic en plein air living room, both inhabitable and theatrical, a meeting place between architecture and nature within a seamless continuity.
