The New Bertalia-Lazzaretto Eco-District project, created by a-fact architecture factory, Weber Architects, Parcnouveau, and ATI Project, has won the international competition launched by the Municipality of Bologna. The New Eco-District aims to serve as a social catalyst and engine of regeneration, strategically integrating existing networks and promoting a more inclusive and connected community life.
Built upon the principles of enhancing natural heritage, fostering sustainable mobility, and introducing a new urban courtyard concept, the project seeks to revitalize the Navile neighborhood. The design stands out for its harmonious integration with the local environment, highlighting landscape elements like the green spaces of Parco del Reno and the Ghisiliera canal. Starting from the revitalization of these natural areas, the plan aims to strengthen social cohesion and initiate a regeneration process that will transform the district into a vibrant hub for Bologna.
This proposal provides an ambitious vision for a more balanced and sustainable future, tapping into the area’s untapped potential. It goes beyond a simple residential development, creating an urban ecosystem that fosters social vitality through multifunctional public spaces designed to serve both new residents and the local community. Innovative sustainability solutions support well-being and social interaction, enhancing the sense of identity and belonging within the community.
With a multi-scalar perspective, the New Eco-District highlights the north-south landscape axis defined by the Ghisiliera canal, transforming it into a pedestrian and cycling greenway that, within a 15-minute walk or bike ride, connects the Pescarola neighborhood to the north, the new housing hub near the University of Bologna, and the city center. This green infrastructure acts as a central spine, linking existing and new urban spaces, promoting sustainable mobility, and integrating the district seamlessly into the urban fabric.
At the heart of the project is the urban courtyard, traffic-free and designed as a lively meeting and social space. Here, the community is invited to interact in a setting of collaboration and sharing, with open-air rooms immersed in nature and illuminated by natural light. This space becomes an ideal stage for activities that foster a new sense of community identity.
