LEGO House is the new home of the historic Billund company that produces building blocks for children. The new design, created by the mounting and overlapping of blocks and volumes, is the work of the Danish BIG studio which on more than one occasion over the past few years has risen to the challenge of interpreting and creating a new, transparent and open corporate image through the use of architecture.
After re-designing the public face of a number of companies such as Google and S. Pellegrino defined through a strong and consolidated image, the LEGO House project for the redevelopment of a central part of the city of Billund posed a further challenge for Bjarke Ingels’ team.
The new building, characterized by the combination of staggered and offset stereometric blocks, intersects and then welcomes the quality public space inside. The square outside and the paths that run through it catalyze the urban dynamics and bring them inside the building; however, on two of the outer faces, the façade is broken down into smaller blocks, creating seats and supports.
While the outer optical white cladding is made of ceramic tiles that look like a stack of LEGO bricks, the interior spaces are dominated by a continuous sequence of interactive exhibitions and displays where the space is marked by the use of primary colours which indicate the presence of play areas, designed to highlight different aspects of the child learning process.
