In Cesena, a former abandoned mechanical workshop has been given a new lease of life, transforming into a contemporary home capable of meeting the needs of a young family. The project, designed by Piraccini+Potente architettura, has successfully combined the memory of the place with a contemporary style, blending domestic spaces and work environments into a fluid and harmonious dimension.
The conversion began with the complete emptying of the interior and a major energy efficiency upgrade: insulation of the building envelope, high-performance fixtures and underfloor heating. The space is redefined by three large monolithic volumes in beech wood, which enclose the more private functions, such as bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry rooms, while the upper part houses a smart working study and a room dedicated to yoga and Pilates. A network of suspended walkways, protected by steel balustrades, connects the blocks, creating a dynamic movement inside, with a metal spiral staircase acting as the distribution hub.
The ground floor opens up as a single continuous space, without spatial hierarchies, in which the living room, kitchen and dining room interact freely. The large glass opening that replaces the old workshop door lets in natural light, amplifying the perception of space and highlighting the Deco Nuvolato flooring by Isoplam. This cementitious surface becomes the key to the intervention: an element capable of evoking the industrial soul of the building while enhancing the brightness and materiality of the interiors.
Applied continuously throughout all rooms, from the living room to the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom, the flooring stands out for its resistance, durability and ease of maintenance. Its advanced formulation makes it waterproof, stain-resistant and oil-resistant, suitable even for the most demanding spaces such as wet areas. Its compatibility with underfloor heating further enhances its performance: the heat is distributed evenly, providing comfort and well-being, while the absence of joints reinforces the idea of an elegant and functional material continuum.
The result is a space that preserves the industrial memory of the original structure and, at the same time, opens up to a new way of living, where living and working coexist seamlessly, under the sign of light, fluidity and a design that looks to the future.
