Completion of the restoration of the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà

The completion of the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà realized by Armellino & Poggio Architetti Associati with Rodolfo Fallucca e Marco Ricchebono, is in continuity with the restoration project, inaugurated in 2014, of the spaces now intended to house the Museum of Ceramics, using the remaining volumes of the building, consisting of the ground floor overlooking Via Aonzo and the four rooms on the first floor.
The design intention is to create a number of services, linked to the exhibition function of the Ceramic Museum, considered fundamental and necessary for its management, namely temporary exhibition spaces, book-shops, but also a meeting and refreshment point for visitors attracted by the nearby Savona museum emergencies, such as the Cathedral, the Sistine Chapel, the Diocesan Museum, the Art Gallery and future cultural and educational activities that will be located in the nearby Palazzo della Rovere.
The general criterion followed is the maximum respect for the structural layout of the rooms, trying to intervene with minimum and necessary changes to create the connection with the adjacent museum function.
The connection between the two floors is made by means of a staircase in the original Monte di Pietà vault; the staircase consists of an enveloping metal structure in stainless steel surrounded by backlit vertical glass panels.
Part of the ground floor, overlooking the square of the Bishopric, houses the Bino Restaurant (by star chef G. Ricchebuono), a space in continuity between food and art.
The main hall welcomes, in a privileged position and able to immediately capture the visitor’s attention, the great high relief by Agenore Fabbri, “The Birth of Ceramics”, restored by the artist Sandro Lorenzini from Savona.
The various furnishing elements created according to the project are designed with a view to cleanliness and linearity, recalling the Museum’s exhibition layouts and are made of solid oak wood and glass.
To be highlighted are the decorative ceramic elements made by Fabbrica Ceramiche Giuseppe Mazzotti of Albisola 1903, designed by Armellino&Poggio.
