In the heart of Trentino, immersed in the natural landscape of the Lasino valley, ZDA – Zanetti Design Architettura designs a single-family residence distinguished by formal rigor, landscape sensitivity, and advanced environmental performance. The project interprets the theme of contemporary living within a mountain context through an essential and integrated architectural language.
The residence, developed over approximately 300 sqm, presents as a compact volume with a rectangular-rhombic plan, positioned transversally on the plot to maximize openness toward the valley and surrounding mountains. Access is from the east, along a path that follows the terrain’s morphology and blends with the landscape, immediately establishing a relationship of continuity between built and natural environments.
The house unfolds over three staggered levels, one of which is partially underground, creating a dynamic and functional volumetric system. The main floor, facing southwest, opens onto a covered terrace that serves as a panoramic threshold and mediating space between interior and exterior. Large glass openings, oriented from east to west, capture natural light and frame views of the Trentino landscape, while the north-south orientation ensures ventilation and thermal comfort.
Structurally, the villa is constructed in cast-in-place reinforced concrete, with two steel pillars supporting the cantilevered volume of the second floor. The envelope, insulated and clad with a ventilated facade of oxidized zinc slats, responds chromatically to the tones of the earth and local vegetation, ensuring durability and low maintenance.
The project places particular emphasis on environmental sustainability: integration of photovoltaic panels, use of heat pumps, proper layering of the building envelope, and exploitation of solar orientation all contribute to high energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. A virtuous example of alpine architecture, where technology, aesthetics, and respect for the context merge into a cohesive narrative.
Founded by Umberto Zanetti, ZDA – Zanetti Design Architettura is a studio based in Milan with projects active in Italy and abroad—including Switzerland, Russia, Belgium, France, and the United States. With a degree in Civil Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Zanetti has gained extensive experience in design and curation, spanning private residences, hospitality, urban research, and complex environments in prefabrication. The studio is known for a multidisciplinary approach that combines aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, with a strong focus on local contexts and languages.
