In the heart of eastern Sicily, nestled within the evocative historic center of Modica, a residence with millennia-old roots has been expertly transformed into an elegant hospitality structure. The restoration project, designed by Bomori Architetti with landscape contributions by LAB 13, has breathed new life into an ancient rock-cut dwelling, enhancing its historical charm and uniqueness.
Villa Petra spans an interior area of 124 square meters, complemented by an extensive 600-square-meter outdoor space. The ground floor, entirely carved into the rock—locally known as “timpa” in the Sicilian dialect—dates back to the early years of the first millennium, bearing witness to the city’s long architectural stratification. The first-floor extension and the external stepped connection system belong to more recent times, illustrating an architectural evolution shaped over centuries.
The renovation project, completed in 2022, aimed to repurpose the property into a vacation home while minimizing invasive interventions to preserve its authenticity. The new internal layout was designed to provide comfortable and functional spaces, while the upgrade of technological systems ensured efficiency and sustainability standards.
A key aspect of the project was the bespoke furniture design, which harmonizes seamlessly with the historic materials of the structure. Lighting was carefully designed to highlight spaces and surfaces, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The landscape design redefined the outdoor areas through the addition of a pergola, a water feature, and a thoughtful selection of plant species, ensuring the residence blends naturally into its surroundings without compromising its identity.
This vacation home in Modica is more than just a place to stay; it offers an immersive experience in the history and architecture of the region, where past and present merge in perfect harmony. A prime example of sensitive restoration, celebrating the uniqueness of the site while embracing contemporary perspectives.
