Casa MaBa as a Mediterranean Story

Nestled among the hills that gently slope towards the Gulf of Squillace, in Montepaone, Casa MaBa fits into the Calabrian landscape as a silent yet incisive presence. The project, overseen by the Barbaro 18 studio under the guidance of Giulia Brutto, intervenes on a newly constructed single-family residence, already in the structural phase at the time of the commission, radically rethinking its internal organization, materials, and dialogue with the context.

From the outset, the objective was to reinterpret the archetype of the Mediterranean house, transforming an anonymous structure into an architectural entity with a strong identity. The absolute white of the surfaces, immersed in the green of the olive trees, and the use of dry-laid natural stone create a narrative of light, material, and belonging. These elements particularly characterize the portico overlooking the pool and some wall sections, establishing a continuity between the built environment and nature.

However, the most radical intervention concerns the interiors, completely rethought in terms of functional distribution. The spaces flow seamlessly, with open areas that open to the outside through large windows, culminating in the striking winter garden on the top floor, from which one can enjoy a view encompassing the landscape between hills and sea. Here, the architecture does not merely frame the landscape but welcomes and incorporates it, transforming the house into a tool for observation and contemplation.

The Mediterranean identity of the house is also expressed in the choice of natural and essential materials, juxtaposed with contemporary and technologically advanced furniture systems, all custom-made by local artisans. This synergy between past and present, between material and innovation, defines a sober yet highly personalized way of living, where every element contributes to creating an intimate and coherent atmosphere.
