BAMG House

Perched atop an ancient village that developed around a selenite quarry, at the foot of Monte Donato hill in Bologna, BAMG House is conceived as an intervention blending historical storytelling with contemporary architectural language. Designed by Luigi Benatti, a partner at TECO+partners, the residence represents a complex renovation and refunctionalization of a late 19th-century stone building, deeply marked by war scars and subsequent reconstruction efforts.

The project engaged with multiple levels: structural restoration, system upgrades, facade redesign, and a complete internal reorganization of the spaces. Through a refined synthesis approach, TECO+partners preserved the building’s original materiality, reinterpreting it with contemporary structural and linguistic elements. The facade, reworked through careful modulation of openings and a calibrated shift in the vertical alignment of the windows, becomes the manifesto of the intervention: a sober yet eloquent gesture capable of narrating the layering of time.

Inside, the house unfolds over two above-ground levels and an underground cellar. The material palette of iron, stone, bricks, plaster, and wood was chosen to enhance the dialogue between different construction eras and strengthen the connection with the site. The intervention coherently expresses the studio’s philosophy, which sees the context as a key generative element of the design, transforming every constraint into an expressive opportunity.

TECO+partners is an architecture studio based in Bologna, comprising over 30 professionals, including 6 partners. Founded on a design approach that considers the project as a tool for understanding reality, the studio is active both in Italy and abroad, working on residential, educational, sports, student housing, office, and industrial projects. Notable projects include residential complexes and student housing in Bologna, numerous schools across Italy, and sports infrastructures such as the Allianz Cloud arena and the Cambini swimming center in Milan.
