A Matter of Matter: ceramics as a sensory presence

During Milan Design Week 2026, Fap ceramiche returned to Alcova with A Matter of Matter, an immersive installation hosted inside the Church of the former Baggio Military Hospital, a suspended and atmospheric space where solemn architecture and spontaneous nature coexisted in a powerful balance.

The project unfolded as a material landscape shaped by light, where sculptural volumes redefined the environment and transformed ceramics into a living, mutable and perceptive element. Reflective surfaces and metallic accents captured and multiplied natural light, while glossy finishes, three-dimensional textures and contrasts between smooth and tactile surfaces created a continuous dialogue between shadow, depth and movement.

Within the installation, visitors were invited to establish a direct relationship with matter. Surfaces could be touched, explored and experienced both visually and physically. Textures, chromatic variations and reflections evolved according to body movement and the changing angle of light, generating a dynamic perception of space. Through this instinctive gesture, ceramics transcended their traditional role as cladding material and became a sensory presence – a narrative matter capable of evoking an emotional and immersive dimension.

A Matter of Matter continued Fap’s research into ceramics as a contemporary architectural language, a vision already explored during Cersaie 2025. Matter was interpreted as a true architectural alphabet composed of different yet complementary surfaces, capable of generating new aesthetic balances and expressive possibilities for contemporary spaces.

Within the evocative setting of Alcova, ceramics were transformed into living architecture: a material capable of reacting to light, interacting with the body and reshaping spatial perception through experience, emotion and sensory connection.
