When it comes to the Monza National Autodrome, attention is often focused on the races that have made it one of the most iconic circuits in international motorsport. Behind every event, however, lies a complex organisational machine that requires efficient, safe and reliable infrastructure. Lighting plays a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the operational activities that take place before each race.
To meet these requirements, PERFORMANCE iN LIGHTING, in collaboration with GEWISS, developed a new lighting system for the Pit Lane and main straight, with the aim of improving safety, functionality and operational efficiency during evening hours or in low-visibility conditions.
Lighting the operations of a complex infrastructure
The areas involved in the project are strategic hubs for the management of sporting events. Set-up activities, equipment handling, logistics and race preparation all take place here, involving teams, suppliers and technical staff and requiring optimal visibility conditions.
The lighting project was developed through dedicated simulations and assessments, with the aim of achieving the illumination levels required by regulations for outdoor working areas while ensuring uniform lighting and visual comfort for operators.
For the Pit Lane and pit area, 68 W WIN PRO 20 floodlights were installed on the roof of the pit building to provide uniform illumination of the operational surfaces below. Along the main straight, including the starting grid and grandstands, 575 W WIN PRO 40 floodlights were installed on the grandstand structures to provide adequate lighting throughout all event preparation stages.
The resulting configuration achieves an average illuminance of approximately 40 lux, providing suitable conditions for operational and logistical activities to be carried out safely.
An integrated approach, from design to final testing
The project was managed by PERFORMANCE iN LIGHTING on a turnkey basis, covering every stage of the process: from preliminary site inspections and analysis of lighting requirements to design and lighting calculations, as well as the supply of fixtures and construction of the supporting structures.
Installation of the system, including electrical connections, was followed by on-site measurements and testing to verify that the performance levels specified in the project had been achieved. This integrated approach made it possible to optimise execution times, the quality of the installation and the reliability of the final result.
Performance, efficiency and reliability for outdoor spaces
In a particularly demanding environment such as an international motor racing circuit, lighting quality must be combined with robustness, continuity of service and energy efficiency.
The WIN PRO range made it possible to meet these requirements by combining high lighting performance with reduced energy consumption. The new system therefore contributes to
improving operator safety, facilitating event preparation and ensuring the full functionality of the circuit’s strategic areas.
The Monza National Autodrome project demonstrates how professional lighting can become a key element in enhancing the performance and efficiency of major sports infrastructures, supporting not only the event experience itself but also all the activities that make it possible.
