The concept presented by the Populous studio, known as “the Cathedral”, turned out to be the project chosen by the football clubs AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano for the New Stadium in Milan. The public interest resolution issued by the Municipality of Milan provides, in addition to the construction of the new stadium, the reconfiguration of the area where the Meazza currently stands, through the creation in the San Siro area of a district for sports and leisure, with a new public park of about 50,000 square meters of green filtering, as well as a further significant reduction of accessory volumes, up to the limit provided by the Government Plan of the Territory.
The area where the new stadium and the new district will be built will be entirely pedestrian, with about 110 thousand square meters of green areas, 40% of the area. The parking lots, which currently represent 27% of the area, will be totally underground with no surface parking. Many of the recreational and sports activities planned, located outdoors or within redeveloped spaces, will be free of charge or in agreement with the City. Following the resolution, the final design will require a few months of work with the aim of arriving at a presentation of a complete project during 2022.
“The Cathedral” wants to represent a celebratory icon of the artistic heritage of the city and is inspired, in fact, by two of the most representative buildings of Milan, the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The project aims to provide Inter and Milan with an avant-garde structure in terms of innovation and eco-sustainability.
The facility, set in a context of urban greenery, will be completely “zero impact” and LEED certified thanks to the best materials and the latest water and energy saving technologies used and the reduction of noise emissions. The new stadium will also represent excellence in terms of accessibility and the stadium experience for fans, who will be guaranteed safety and comfort, quality of vision, variety of services and an unparalleled atmosphere and involvement. AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano confirm their desire to launch a project of excellence in Milan, which will generate new jobs, improve an important urban area of the city and offer the neighborhood a new public park of over 50 thousand square meters of green filter. The project will therefore represent an extraordinary opportunity to relaunch the City of Milan and Italian soccer.
