A subtle, hidden light outlines the contours of a hotel that harks back to an ancient era, to a local China that turns its head back to the past but with an eye on the present. As the first luxury hotel brand that is truly rooted in Chinese civilisation, Ahn Luh Guantang Resorts and Residence is deeply rooted in the style of local architecture and creates an original old-world charm that can be explored all year round while maintaining its official design style. How can we welcome our guests and provide them with comfort? PROL used the concept of “hidden light”, generating the unique design of the space for the resort in the western Sichuan region, The lighting remains hidden in the space. The designer captured the subtle atmosphere between space and mind, formulating the authentic look of the hotel through lighting. Through a layered and emotional design method, the lighting is presented to combine with nature. During the day, the sun shines on all things and blends into all things, inspiring travellers’ perception of life. During the night, light hides in all things, building people’s experience and admiration of life.
The hotel lobby is dazzling and well structured. Under the flowing light, the ingenuity of the stone pillars and the simplicity of the beams are contrasted, and the ‘thickness’ and ‘subtlety’ of western Sichuan are presented together. The light hidden behind the fine wooden grille of the banquet hall reveals a subtle and vague beauty, and also blends a trace of chic and delicacy into the simple style of Western Sichuan. The all-day bar restores the dining scene of the old Sichuan home: open space, neat tables and chairs. After lighting the wall lanterns, warm light filled the room, as if to blend everyone together. The carefully set light is carefully emphasised, and also distinguishes the privacy of each table. In the spa and pool areas, the light is deeper, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. Quiet, blurred light appears freely everywhere in the space, arousing people’s perception of a quiet life in a refuge away from the world. The guest rooms, clay walls, thatched roofs, wooden beams, all these features are clear in the hotel’s western Sichuan building style.
In response, the use of artificial light is reduced in the interior to reduce brightness. However, considering the long-term urban living habits of modern people, designers still use decorative lights and indirect lighting to enrich the spatial hierarchy and give guests a comfortable state to feel the western Sichuan style. In the Ahn Luh Guantang Resorts and Residence, ingenious natural light seems to be nowhere to be found, yet it is everywhere. This is a design strategy and a way of thinking. Here, the light doesn’t reflect and flash gold, it doesn’t show, just quietly and subtly retreats behind the space, properly presents the architectural charm of western Sichuan style, so that every traveler who comes to Ahn Luh Guantang Resorts and Residence can feel the experience of empathy in the light and shadow of the landscape.
