German designer Sebastian Herkner takes inspiration from traditional Japanese rituals and craftsmanship to create Zencha, a sophisticated bathroom collection created especially for Duravit.
The most striking design feature of his product line – freestanding washbasin and bathtub – is the rounded shape, which ends in a soft, delicate rim.
Made of DuraCeram® and DuraSolid® respectively, they are combined with modular and geometric furniture made of materials such as wood and glass, characterised by ample storage space and offering a special feel.
“I started the collection Zencha with Duravit three years ago – says the German Designer – I was inspired by Japanese tea bowls for the sink and bathtub. Your bathroom should be the room in your house that is offline.
A place to relax, recharge, and prepare for the day. Similar to a tea ceremony in Asia, what you do in the bathroom is a ritual.
The sinks and free standing bath tubs are smooth and elegant and are available in square or rectangular.
The storage furniture comes with four different finishes so you can mix and match different textures that play with the senses, natural oak, black wood, white flat glass, or black textured glass.
It is important for interior architects to create different worlds, characters and personalities”.
In addition to the lines, the materials used are just as sensual: the washbasins are made of DuraCeram®, a material that makes it possible to create products with an extremely thin rim that are absolutely easy to maintain and durable. The bathtubs are made of DuraSolid® in one piece and captivate with their warm feel and elegant matt appearance.
Characterised by straight, bold lines, the furniture creates a beautiful contrast to the organically shaped ceramics. The outstanding feature of Sebastian Herkner’s design is a slim frame only six millimetres thick, which forms a uniform joint and makes the furniture elegant and light.
“Producing such technically complex solutions with consistent quality only works if, like Duravit, you have your own production facilities with appropriate know-how and a high level of craftsmanship” says the designer.
Herkner now joins the ranks of renowned designers who, like Philippe Starck and Cecilie Manz, have designed collections for Duravit.
