Utopian and Sacred Architecture Studies

On 11th, 12th and 13th June, the international conference “Utopian and Sacred Architecture Studies” (USAS) will be held at the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” in Aversa, thanks to a partnership with IEREK – International Experts for Research Enrichment and Knowledge Exchange – an institution, based in Alexandria, Egypt, involved on a daily basis with the exchange of knowledge and the improvement of research, dealing with the organization and management of scientific conferences around the world. The scientific event has been organized by the DADI in collaboration with the PhD in “Architecture, Industrial Design and Cultural Heritage” of Vanvitelli University.

Through studies on the Sacred Space, declined in the different areas of architecture, from the historical to the more technical and design ones, the conference aims to contribute to rediscover the great topic of the UTOPIA, in an age characterized by the crisis of ideals and the alleged clash of civilization, but also by the deeply rooted aspiration to build a new world.

The conference, attended by speakers from prestigious Italian and foreign universities, will be introduced by four keynote speakers: Niccolò Casiddu, director of the Department of Architecture and Design of the University of Genova; Alfred Jacoby, professor at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences; Salvatore Frigerio, a Camaldolese monk, architect and president of the Collegium “Scriptorium Fontis Avellanae”; Muhyiddin Bottiglioni, imam representative of COREIS (the Italian Islamic Religious Community) and expert of Islamic art.

In the last day of the conference held in the Abbey of San Lorenzo in Septimum in Aversa, the department’s headquarters, the 13th of June, the guest authors are invited to a visit of the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Belvedere of San Leucio, the historic site which houses the renowned silk factories and the “Officina Vanvitelli”, a “Luigi Vanvitelli” University project inaugurated in January 2019 by the Rector Giuseppe Paolisso, a member of the conference’s Honorary Committee.
