The doors of Superstudio Maxi in Milan open to host the contemporary art fair-not-fair, (un)fair, until 3 March.
Conceived by Manuela Porcu and Laura Gabellotto, co-produced by Superstudio Events and realised with the support of a Scientific Committee made up of experts from the world of art and communication, (un)fair brings 60 galleries, both domestic and foreign, to Milan. Among the countries represented are Japan, Mexico, Iran, Turkey, Hungary and Spain.
The theme of the 3rd edition is desire, understood as the aspiration and feeling of passionate research, which carries within itself a sense of lack to be filled, so (un)fair represents the answer to that need in the art world today to find alternatives to the classic exhibition formats.
There are many and all different desires that (un)fair proposes to fulfil, which already come to life in the campaign signed by the artist Rooy Charlie Lana, a work of art that speaks of identity, of the body as a performative act, of hidden desires, shot right in the Superstudio Maxi bathrooms.
“My artistic research explores the hiding places of desire. For the communication campaign of (un)fair 2024, I worked on an advertising poster format that could, however, portray scenes of cruising, of public toilets where hidden desires dwell. These are casual and exciting encounters that mimic the production of pleasure with inflatable objects. In these shots Transghost appears, a body-identity other than the definitions of man/woman, hetero/man etc., which is recognisable through the green zentai, a full, tight-fitting jumpsuit, a superficial, epidermal layer capable of hiding the distinctive physiognomic features such as the face and skin colour of a human being,” comments Rooy Charlie Lana.
At a time when we are witnessing the proliferation of innovative events at an international level, (un)fair presents an original model in Italy, introducing the latest trends in contemporary art in a more experiential way.
Indeed, (un)fair 2024 presents a poker of special sections and paths, including new media, design, illustration and performing arts, such as: new media and new generation artists curated by Luisa Ausenda, i.e. a selection of galleries and initiatives on new technologies and new languages of the contemporary; contemporary craft and collectible design curated by Riccardo Sorani of Esh Gallery dedicated to the materiality of works, increasingly appreciated by the new generations; illustration curated by Chiara Pozzi and Illustrazioni Seriali, with 4 galleries presenting works by illustrators who have succeeded in carving out a place for themselves in the contemporary art scene; empathic dialogues, the performing arts programme for (un)fair curated by Alessio Vigni; cortocircuito, the new special project that catapults a modern and ancient art gallery among the fair’s contemporary art galleries.
Desire at (un)fair finds an adults-only declination with Erotika III by ClitSplash, a feminist collective born in Cuba that talks about liberation and wants to provide diversity of perspectives in the sphere of sexuality through actions in the metaverse.
The key themes of the fair will be explored in depth in the programme of talks, which will also include appointments on collecting today, curated by Giorgia Ligasacchi, Art Consultat of the Pavesio e Associati with Negri-Clementi studio, partner of the fair.
