From 1st to 29th October 2020, despite the uncertainties of this period, Torino Design of the City returns with enthusiasm and obstinacy, with appointments in attendance and at a distance.
Once again this year the programme brings together the initiatives organised by the bodies working on Design and adhering to the Consultative Table, from Graphic Days, which opens with Transitions and investigates the paradigms and scenarios relating to society and the environment and their transitions, to Utopian Hours, the latest show on the bill, which this time has the theme The City At Stake and goes to the heart of the problem: the identity and raison d’être of the city are now deeply rooted in
discussion.
And again, just to name a few, Torino Fashion Week, the virtual visit to the UN Campus in Turin, the exhibition LINGOTTO LIVES & RE-LIVES, Masterclass 2020 on making a museum accessible, the exhibition Unico. Art design that highlights the hybrid and exclusive nature of art-design works, alongside the exhibition proposed by Sant’Agostino casa d’Aste, the presentation of the results of the research and the Felicità Civica ideas competition, the appointments at MAUTO and many other events, initiatives and reviews.
There is no lack of performances, such as VIA SACCHI RE-LIVE, the initiatives of Hackability, which is recently awarded the Honorable Mention of the XXVI ADI Compasso d’Oro Award, the presentation, by Fondazione Santagata, of an international survey on the demand for sustainability expressed by UNESCO sites, the inauguration of the renovated Urban Lab headquarters, and the Bottom Up!
It will be possible to attend online and in English the round tables scheduled as part of the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design meeting, this year hosted online by Graz in collaboration with St. Étienne, which focuses on the social, intelligent and sustainable aspects of urban development. Guests include Andrea Paoletti, Charles Landry and Aglaée Degros.
The City of Turin organised two events: the first, together with delegates from Italy’s UNESCO Creative Cities, on 16 October, for the signing of a Protocol outlining future common lines of work to be shared with the recently appointed new creative cities, including the Piedmontese city of Biella. The aim is to strengthen the network and build collaborative projects between Italian UNESCO Creative Cities at regional and national level.
The second, on 29 October, a day organised in collaboration with the Circolo del Design, dedicated to the presentation of the research “TCD.1 Torino Città del Design: strategies for internationalisation”. The research, curated by the Santagata Foundation for the Economy of Culture with the support of Compagnia di San Paolo and the Chamber of Commerce, outlined the common elements of identity, visions and needs expressed by the players in the city’s design sector – creatives, designers, companies, training bodies, students, institutions – and is the basis for building the lines of action that the Administration will put in place over the next few years and which it will recount during the day.
Turin’s work on Design therefore continues through analysis, in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the supply chain and the construction of networks at national and international level.
