The multi-generational facility in an historically underserved neighborhood is the first-of-its-kind in the region.
The design assembles landscape, bike trials, and passenger train line into a piece of meaningful social infrastructure.
A sense of place is formed by the intersection of recreation, community, education, and commuting.
The 25,000 square foot facility provides the residents of South Dallas with a gymnasium, game room, fitness room, exercise room, catering kitchen, technology lab, multipurpose community room, and Senior Center.
Inspired by the geological evolution and activities of the site through time, Singing Hills Recreation Center is conceived as an extension of the land.
The site was once layered with dense trees but has now given way to a sprinkling of limestone outcroppings throughout the site.
Translating nature, the tree canopies of the past have been abstracted to an undulating plane hovering in the air, with the underbrush and lower limbs trimmed, to frame and to reveal the human activities between the sky and the land.
