Tuesday, December 14, 2021 The European Commission together with Triennale Milano organized a meeting to present the Italian winning projects of the “new European Bauhaus” and “emerging stars of the new European Bauhaus” awards (young talents under 30 years old) and to announce the next developments of the New European Bauhaus project. Triennale Milano was the first Italian institution to be recognized by the European Commission among the partners of the project for the attention to the themes of design, architecture, environmental sustainability and urban planning that has always characterized its cultural activity.
On September 16, 2021, the Commission announced the winners of the “new European Bauhaus” and “emerging stars of the new European Bauhaus” awards. The awards recognize best practices, examples, and concepts that illustrate the New European Bauhaus values of sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusiveness. Five Italian projects were awarded: one among the ten prizewinners in the “new European Bauhaus” section – which received a grant of €30,000 each – and four among the ten prizewinners in the “emerging stars of the new European Bauhaus” section, which received prizes worth €15,000 each.
The winning Italian project in the “new European Bauhaus” section is:
-Esseri urbani. The other side of the art (Puglia), in the category “Mobilization of culture, arts and communities”. Using contemporary art as a tool to stimulate urban and social regeneration, Esseri Urbani proposes to the public the work of emerging artists during free outdoor exhibitions. The project is an opportunity to create a connection between communities, landscapes and local architecture through contemporary artistic expression. It also opens up new possibilities for creation and curating: exhibiting art in public spaces produces new perspectives, both for the works and for the places.
The four Italian projects awarded in the section “emerging stars of the new European Bauhaus” are:
-Eco-quartiere Porto di Mare (Milan), in the category “Renovated urban and rural spaces”; a redevelopment project of the metropolitan area between Milan and the surrounding countryside, based on low-carbon energy planning strategies
-Retrofitting of the Ivrea Unesco site, in the category “Conservation and transformation of cultural heritage”; a project that aims to develop a modernization strategy that takes into account both environmental and cultural sustainability.
-Post-emergency social reconstruction (Florence), in the category “Places rethought to meet and share”; The project proposes a series of resilient tools useful to design post-emergency settlements centered on open spaces, and therefore able to ensure social sustainability.
-Materieunite (Terni), in the category “Products and lifestyle”; permanent and temporary installations for events and stores using sustainable cardboard as raw material, next to other recycled materials or recovered from the waste of supply chains.
