Good acoustics and proper lighting are central aspects in the design of community spaces such as workplaces, education or in public spaces in the hospitality or catering sector. If carefully designed, these two components combine to make environments comfortable and pleasant, contributing to improving their usability and functionality.
Since 2012 Luceplan has been researching and proposing ‘all-in-one’ solutions that combine high lighting performance, high sound absorption performance and high design. The Milan-based company was among the first in the lighting sector to combine the theme of light with sound-absorbing properties. Thanks to a close synergy with the professionals it works with, Luceplan is able to offer products that are true architectural elements capable of defining and personalising a wide variety of contexts.
The first product with sound-absorbing properties to enter the Luceplan catalogue was Pétale, designed by Studio Odile Decq. Like the petal from which it takes its name, this lamp is characterised by the idea of lightness and grace with which it appears to hover suspended. The lamp body, covered with a white fabric, reveals an extraordinary technical feature: it is made of a sound-absorbing panel that makes the lamp able to absorb noise.
The Luceplan range was then enriched with Silenzio and Diade products, thanks to the collaboration with designer and architect Monica Armani. Silenzio is a lighting system that combines furnishing solutions with high sound-absorbing performance for public and private spaces, representing a design response with great performance capacities that accompanies the beauty of fabrics with the quality of light: a ‘tailor-made’ lighting that furnishes and personalises the environment, a perfect expression of the combination of technology and design. Silenzio lends itself to harmoniously furnishing a variety of environments, from hospitality spaces to workspaces, and even more intimate settings such as home-office spaces.
Diade, on the other hand, offers a linear and rigorous design: it consists of a linear LED lamp dedicated to workplaces, a modular architectural element capable of defining space and personalising the environment. The two ‘wing’ panels can be positioned vertically or horizontally to create a backdrop or, on the contrary, a large ceiling. The two proposed solutions resolve in a unicum light, sound absorption and the ‘ceiling’ of the space, eliminating the need for false ceilings. The panels, thermoformed with highly sound-absorbent wadding, are moulded and marked by lines that have both a decorative and structural purpose. The technical LED light, ideal for work, is directed downwards and upwards from the central line, with the possibility of two optics as required.
Another product with sound-absorbing characteristics is Farel, designed by Diego Sferrazza, who introduced for the first time in the Luceplan catalogue the iconic dome structure, a neutral geometry proposed in sound-absorbing thermoformed material covered with fabric on the outside. The lamp is customisable thanks to the combination of lampshade colours ranging from cool, warm and neutral tones for the exterior, combined with dark or light tones for the interior. Farel is also distinguished by its very low environmental impact: the fabric that covers the lampshade’s exterior comes from 100% recycled yarns.
With a design approach that differs from its predecessors, Trypta, designed by Stephen Burks, introduces a pendant luminaire system that offers a combination of acoustic characteristics and lighting performance in different sizes and colours. The cylindrical aluminium body is equipped with two LED sources for both direct and indirect and diffuse light emission. Three slots on the body of the luminaire allow the mounting of three acoustic panels, positioned at an angle of 120°. The core of the panels, made of high-performance soundproofing material, is covered with elegant fabric, available in various colours. The lamp body is available in two different lengths, while the panels are available in a wide range of sizes, with the possibility of creating various configurations – flat, staggered and mixed – by combining panels of different sizes in different positions.
The latest product to be added to the family of acoustic collections is the Koinè pendant lamp, born from the collaboration with Mandalaki. To the high technological and lighting performance that distinguishes it, Koinè in the acoustic version adds a further innovative component. The reflector becomes a hat made of 60% recycled felt that not only plays an important decorative role, but also improves acoustic comfort in the space by reducing sound reverberation times. Inside, an aluminium portion completes the surface and helps to support the felt on one side and dissipate the heat of the source on the other.
Luceplan’s acoustic collection best represents the company’s great ability to propose Made in Italy lighting solutions, the result of great research and innovation, capable of combining tailored lighting with acoustic comfort. Pétale, Silenzio, Diade, Farel, Trypta and Koinè are design responses of great performance capacity that combine the beauty of design with the quality of light.
