Located within the Odingrad Lesnoy residential complex in Moscow, the Japanese Style Apartment for a Young Man represents a refined balance between minimalist aesthetics and advanced functionality. Designed by Vita Linder, this 60-square-meter space on the 23rd floor of a high-rise seamlessly blends modern design with Japandi influences, emphasizing natural light, organic materials, and meticulous spatial organization.
Originally delivered without finishes or structural constraints such as load-bearing walls or columns, the apartment offered extensive opportunities for customization. The absence of rigid partitions allowed Vita Linder to completely rethink the layout, transforming a previously fragmented space into an open and fluid environment. The final configuration includes a central area combining the kitchen and living room, a separate bedroom, and two bathrooms: a master bathroom with direct access from the bedroom and a second bathroom that also serves as a laundry room.
The clients wanted a modern interior that would be memorable yet calm and discreet. Taking this into account, the studio worked with textures and materials, incorporating a significant number of original furniture pieces as well as collectible art and design objects created specifically for the project. The result is a fully conceived project as an integral work of art, where the final image is composed of multifaceted elements.
The choice of materials was central to creating a warm and sophisticated atmosphere. Natural light oak, used for flooring, panels, and furniture, ensures visual consistency throughout the apartment, complemented by a soft and delicate color palette developed in collaboration with the clients. This preference for local and natural materials was further highlighted by the decision to support Russian manufacturers, with upholstered furniture supplied by Ossen and custom carpentry crafted by Mebburo.
An innovative choice of finishes can be seen in the laundry room, where painted MDF panels were used for the walls instead of traditional ceramic tiles or porcelain. This approach created visual continuity with the adjacent corridor and kitchen, contributing to a light and delicate ambiance that challenges conventional utility space aesthetics. The project stands as a model of understated luxury, where every element—from technical details to design choices—contributes to an atmosphere of elegant serenity.
The Japanese Style Apartment for a Young Man demonstrates how contemporary design can meet the demands of comfort, functionality, and sustainability without compromising aesthetics. Through the synergy of minimalism and local craftsmanship, Vita Linder has created a space that not only reflects the clients’ vision but also enriches the domestic environment with innovative solutions and a personalized approach.
