“Gnosis [30 years of] Projects. Costruire contemporaneo nel costruito” is the monograph recounting the evolution of the architectural and engineering thought of the Gnosis studio. Edited by Prof. Alessandro Castagnaro and Dr. Alberto Terminio, it recounts three decades of activity of the Neapolitan design studio. Born from the initiative of three friends, Gnosis evolved from a ‘communion of intentions’ to an Association, then to a Limited Liability Company and, finally, to a Cooperative Society. Today, the firm has over 40 partners and some 20 consultants.
The book aims to illustrate the thirty years of projects, from the beginning to the present, where the maturation of the founders of Gnosis is evident in the commissions accepted, the competitions won and the design hand. The numerous awards and publications over the three decades testify to this growth.
The monograph is divided into three chapters, each devoted to a decade of activity. Despite the complexity of summarising thirty years of creativity, the critical selection of projects made by the curators makes the volume even more interesting.
The selected works reflect the variety of design typologies addressed, the different compositional solutions adopted and the dialogue with the historical built heritage, where new interventions are almost always integrated. From private commercial projects to large infrastructures, from victories in important international competitions to collective cultural facilities, architecture is understood as an evolutionary process of the context in which it is inserted.
The volume is enriched by contributions from renowned professionals and friends of the firm, such as Gaetano Manfredi, Federica Brancaccio, Michelangelo Russo, Bruno Discepolo and Renata Picone. Their prefaces and afterwords highlight the cultural and methodological value of Gnosis and its relationship with the evolution of the times. In three decades, in fact, social, environmental and political changes, together with legislative changes, have inevitably influenced the creativity and planning of the founders.
