Forte dei Marmi’s Museum of Modern Art is born

The new “Il quarto Platano” Museum of Modern Art in Forte dei Marmi has been inaugurated at Villa Bertelli, a prestigious late 19th-century villa and cultural center owned by the municipality and located in the heart of the city.
The opening to the public, which took place in partnership with the Fondazione Corrente of Milan, aims to give life to a new museum dedicated to the great artistic personalities who animated Milanese culture and frequented the territory of Versilia from the early 20th century until the 1970s.

The Museum’s itinerary is articulated in a continuum among five thematic exhibition spaces: the first room is dedicated to the cultural history of the territory; the path continues with the masters of the 20th century and the authors active in the postwar period.
Prestigious artists are on display: Massimo Campigli, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, Ugo Guidi, Renato Guttuso, Mino Maccari, Carlo Mattioli, Francesco Messina, Henry Moore, Alberto Savinio, Arturo Tosi, and Ernesto Treccani, among many others.
The fourth room displays author’s photographs and documents that testify to the presence of famous writers and poets such as Piero Bigongiari, Magda De Grada, Eugenio Montale, Enrico Pea, Piero Santi, and Vittorio Sereni, enriching the intense dialogue between art and territory.
Finally, one room is dedicated to sculptor Arturo Dazzi, whose works were donated by his heirs to the City of Forte dei Marmi.

The layout, curated by Jacopo Muzio – Studio Jam Architettura of Milan, includes exhibition rooms of different colors and articulated display supports to accompany the viewer on a visit in close contact with the architectural character of Villa Bertelli, enhancing thematically the different nuclei of works on display.
There are horizontal passepartout showcases where, through the reproduction of iconographic apparatus and in-depth information, the cultural context and biographical profiles of the artists are narrated, highlighting their connection with the territory.
In the center of the rooms, public seating houses some of the sculptures in the collection.
The Villa’s new rooms dedicated to a permanent exhibition space thus effectively complement the Foundation’s other activities as well, developing a new awareness among citizens and tourism of Forte dei Marmi’s artistic and cultural history.
