On Saturday 11th May 2024, an interesting conference entitled “Exploring Majolica in Architecture: A Multidisciplinary Path between Design and Architecture” will be held at the Council Chamber of the Savona Town Hall.
Organised by ADI’s Thematic Commission “Handmade in Italy”, the event offers an opportunity to examine the role of majolica in contemporary architecture and explore the intersections between design, architecture and neuroscience.
The main objective of the conference is to encourage architects to integrate the use of handmade ceramics in their creations, emphasising its significance as an authentic Italian cultural and manufacturing heritage.
This initiative aims to highlight both design and human values that emerge through direct dialogue with craftsmen, offering the possibility of creating unique works that enrich the intangible values of architectural projects.
The conference programme will present a wide range of talks by experts in the field, offering a comprehensive overview of this fascinating and relevant topic.
The role of design and architecture in contemporary society will be discussed with Nicoletta Negro, Councillor for Culture and Tourism District Policies of the Municipality of Savona; Enrico Gollo, President of ADI Liguria; Andrea Branciforti, President of ADI Sicily; and Fabio Filiberti, of ADI Liguria. This will be followed by the speeches of Niccoló Casiddu, Director of the Department of Architecture and Design of the University of Genoa (Il New European Bauhaus e il progetto contemporaneo) while Luca Parodi, from the Department of Architecture and Design of the University of Genoa (Intrecci virtuosi tra know-how locale, ricerca multidisciplinare e art direction) will talk about contemporary ceramics and design. Alfonso Femia, founder of Atelier(S) Alfonso Femia AF 517 will talk about Maiolica between tradition and innovation and then, with Danilo Trogu, will analyse the synergy between designer and craftsman. Finally, Daniele Panucci, from the Museum of Ceramics in Savona, will talk about ceramics in urban design, the Albisola Diffuse Museum and the creation of cultural spaces.
The event has received the patronage of ADI – Association for Industrial Design, the Municipality of Savona, the University of Genoa through the Department of Architecture and Design, and the Museum of Ceramics of Savona.
