The lamatilde studio designs the new EDIT Milano space in the setting of the former Scalo Farini industrial area, Milan’s historic railway junction, thus confirming its collaboration with the Italian brewery.
EDIT, an acronym for EAT DRINK INNOVATE TOGETHER, is a brand new format in the food & beverage sector. Conceived by Marco Brignone in collaboration with lamatilde and the business accelerator The Doers, it is an international unicum that contaminates American culinary incubators with the innovative specificities of Italian cuisine and the experimental potential of craft breweries.
After the EDIT Torino space, with its 2,400 square metres in the heart of the historical ex-industrial district Barriera di Milano in Turin, EDIT Milano takes up the format by configuring itself as an Italian Pub with adjoining brewery and production plant.
In line with the studio’s design approach and EDIT’s language, the architecture maintains the site’s industrial heritage. The rough concrete surfaces, with the traditional formwork with wooden slats, the exposed fixtures and a strong use of metal are a tribute to the Brutalist style and post-industrial aesthetics.
The beating heart of the restaurant and central element of the project, the concrete island counter with pewter top replicates the one designed for the first EDIT in Turin, thus giving the interior a coherent identity. The workmanship of the cement, with its particular grid surface, is flanked by the entirely handcrafted shaped top, creating an element with a strong scenic presence. In fact, a large part of the customer experience develops around the counter: one side is dedicated to the tapping and serving of beer, the other to the cafeteria and cocktail bar.
The perimeter of the bar is characterised by the coexistence of the cement effect walls and the milled viroc boiserie that echoes the texture grid of the counter, creating material and visual continuity.
Completing and further characterising the space are two open rooms for the fermentation and processing of EDIT’s craft beers.
