The opening date of the “supersalone”, the “concentrated” edition of the Salone del Mobile 2021 that will take place at Fiera Milano from 5 to 10 September, is approaching. It was strongly desired by the curator Stefano Boeri, by the international team of co-designers – Andrea Caputo, Maria Cristina Didero, Anniina Koivu, Lukas Wegwerth, Marco Ferrari and Elisa Pasqual of Studio Folder together with Giorgio Donà, co-founder and director of Stefano Boeri Interiors – and by all the staff of the Salone del Mobile. Milan with great commitment, courage and, above all, a sense of responsibility.
There are over 423 brands in every product category, distributed in four pavilions, convinced that the “supersalone” can become the symbol of a new Renaissance. Recognition of the importance and symbolic value of this “supersalone” will also be confirmed by the presence of high governmental and institutional authorities – first and foremost the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the day of the inauguration – who have always testified to the extent to which the Show represents one of the engines of the Italian economy, thanks to the fertile relationship it manages to create between companies, cities and territories.
Innovation, attention to environmental impact, creativity tout court, cultural exchange and digital experiences will represent the lexicon of “supersalone”: an event that will draw on the strength of the design imagination to become a laboratory of experimentation and contamination, a meeting place and new opportunities to reflect on the world of design and to meet its protagonists.
Reinforcing the green intent of “supersalone” will also be the trees of Forestami with an ad hoc project that will consist in the setting up of a “forest” of about 100 trees through which visitors can reach the entrance turnstiles of Porta Est. Another 100 tall trees will then accompany visitors inside the various exhibition areas and in living areas dedicated to relaxation. The trees used – lime trees, ash trees, oaks, flowering plum trees – will then be planted in the areas of Milan’s Metropolitan City.
One of the special exhibitions at “supersalone” will be The Lost Graduation Show, curated by Anniina Koivu, which will showcase 170 projects by students who graduated between 2020 and 2021, from 48 design schools in 22 countries across five continents. A unicum in the history of the Salone that will involve all sectors of furniture design, but not only. Incursions into the world of mobility, inclusive, medical and sports design, research into materials and the sustainability of the project will tell the state of the art of an entire sector.
Another important exhibition will be Take Your Seat / Prendi posizione – Solitude and Conviviality of the Chair / Solitudine e Convivialità della sedia, curated by Nina Bassoli, in collaboration with ADI / Premio del Compasso d’Oro. With 30 chairs awarded the Compasso d’Oro Prize and more than 80 honourable mentions, distributed in the four pavilions of “supersalone”, the exhibition will tell the story of the most iconic object in design. Divided into four thematic sections, with the addition of an “extra” section within the ADI Design Museum, it will show how design has conveyed language and content through major changes in society and how it has been able to react to new cultural paradigms through new inventions.
Curated by Maria Cristina Didero, the “supersalone” programme will be packed with conversations, talks and lectures by designers, architects, artists, scholars and managers from all over the world. The protagonists will try to answer various questions concerning design, art, architecture, education, circular economy, environmental impact, the relationship between project and curatorship and much more in a series of dialogues or one man shows.
This and much more will be “supersalone”: a special project thanks to which the Salone del Mobile.Milano wants to be the promoter and catalyst of actions, thoughts and feelings that allow the entire sector and the entire supply chain to restart with optimism, giving life to a new Renaissance.
