Design at the Peak is the initiative that Saporiti Italia is organising on the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2024, from 16 to 21 April 2024, at Palazzo Lombardia, inside the extraordinary pyramid structure that will be sent at the end of the year by EV-K2-CNR to Nepal to the Base Camp for the ascents to Mount Everest and K2. On this occasion, the winning projects of the “Saporiti Design Experience” research laboratories carried out in Dubai in collaboration with Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation and in Milan with POLI.design and the Brera Academy, to which Saporiti Italia has proposed to re-interpret the design and the fabric of the iconic Miamina armchair, will be presented.
“Saporiti Design Experience” is a project launched by the company with the aim of contributing to the professional training and cultural growth of students from schools and institutions linked to the world of design and art. The project has two other editions behind it, the first in 2022 and then in 2023, involving students and researchers from the Milan Polytechnic and IUAV of Venice.
But what links the company to the EV-K2-CNR Pyramid-Laboratory? In 1987, it was Saporiti Italia that contributed to the creation of the EV-K2-CNR Pyramid, the highest research laboratory in the world, which was created at the base camp for the ascent of Mount Everest and K2, at an altitude of 5,050 metres, dedicated to the study of the dynamics of climate change, the sustainable development of mountain areas and the protection of fragile high-altitude ecosystems. The company then not only sponsored the laboratory-pyramid, building its interior out of special ultra-light materials, but also created a special edition of the Miamina, with a lightened structure and the canvas designed by the famous graphic artist Bob Noorda.
Today, EV-K2-CNR continues to develop its projects and, with the support of the Lombardy Region, has built an impressive new 25-metre pyramid structure, which will be sent to Nepal at the end of the year and, superimposed on the existing Pyramid-Laboratory, will allow it to be modernised and enlarged.
Once again, Saporiti Italia will support and sponsor the EV-K2-CNR research project, with technical contributions and research grants aimed at studying the impact of climate change on scientific, technological, economic and social activities, both in extreme environments and in our ecosystems.
It is precisely the Miamina that will unite the two initiatives, on the one hand the EV-K2-CNR Pyramid and on the other the Saporiti Design Experience: students from the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation and in Milan from POLI.design and the Brera Academy have been asked to re-interpret the design and the fabric of the iconic armchair, just as graphic designer Bob Noorda did in 1990 for the EV-K2-CNR Pyramid.
On the occasion of ‘Design at the Peak’, alongside the Miamina EV-K2-CNR, the prototypes of five Miamina armchairs designed by students from Dubai and Milan and awarded by Saporiti Italia for their contents of technological innovation and modernity, but also sustainability and social responsibility, will be presented. The members of the award-winning teams will receive a contribution from the company for their studies and, in particular, the four girls awarded with the First Prize in Dubai will be invited by Saporiti Italia on a study trip to Milan for the Salone del Mobile week, thus also having the opportunity to present their project directly to visitors at the EV-K2-CNR Pyramid.
