In the historic center of Siena, overlooking the enchanting Piazza del Battistero del Duomo, the apartment renovated by interior designer Emilia Bonelli stands as a project that masterfully combines tradition and modernity. Developed in a context as iconic as it is delicate, the first goal of the project was the structural consolidation of the building, a necessary step to ensure the safety of the property while enhancing its historical heritage. This technical phase laid a solid foundation for redefining the interiors, designed to meet the needs of a client eager to live in a youthful, functional, and dynamic environment.
The theme of color played a central role in the project, becoming the guiding thread that influenced every choice, from materials to finishes and the definition of atmospheres. The carefully curated color palette was used to create spaces that interact with the natural light streaming generously through the windows overlooking the historic square. This approach gave the apartment a strong identity, where each room takes on its own unique character without losing the overall sense of continuity. Thus, color becomes not only an aesthetic element but also a narrative tool, capable of setting the rhythm of the living experience and evoking different emotions depending on the space.
Beyond color, particular attention was paid to the choice of materials. The original flooring was restored to preserve the building’s authenticity and historical memory, while the walls and surfaces were enriched with contemporary textures and finishes, creating an intriguing contrast that emphasizes the dialogue between past and present. The custom-designed furniture meets the demands of modern living: modularity, versatility, and functionality were the primary criteria for their selection and creation. Each piece, while maintaining strong aesthetic value, was designed to optimize space, making the apartment perfectly adaptable to contemporary lifestyles.
The strategic location of the apartment, in one of Siena’s landmark sites, required a design sensitivity capable of respecting the cultural value of the surrounding environment while harmoniously integrating the needs for comfort and modernity typical of contemporary living. The project showcases how design can serve as a tool for dialogue between historical heritage and the demands of modern life, demonstrating how architecture and interior design can help renew and enhance existing heritage without compromising its authenticity. Through the skillful use of color, a careful selection of materials, and a design focused on functionality, Bonelli has created a living space that not only meets the client’s needs but also offers an aesthetic and cultural experience, inspiring a new way of thinking about domesticity.
