Bulgari Hotel Roma: Friul Mosaic unites the past and present of the Maison

The Bulgari Hotel Roma is the second hotel in Italy and the ninth jewel in the worldwide collection of Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, which currently includes properties in Milan, London, Paris, Dubai, Beijing, Shanghai, Bali and Tokyo, with planned openings in the Maldives and Miami (2025) and Los Angeles (2026).

The hotel is a stone’s throw from Via del Corso, the Spanish Steps and the historic Bulgari shop on Via Condotti. The Maison treasures a deep bond with the city, which saw its birth almost 140 years ago: the Bulgari Hotel Roma celebrates the most refined qualities of the Eternal City, going beyond the commonplace, and is a showcase of the finest Italian design and craftsmanship, which are celebrated through the attention to every detail.
The imposing building that houses the hotel (with a total area of 14,000 square metres) dates back to 1940 and has recently been transformed into a majestic modern monument, thanks to the bold vision of ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. The studio has masterfully balanced the aesthetic rigour of the stones used in imperial Rome and the architectural cleanliness of the building through the use of particularly rich textures.

The hotel’s 114 suites recall the hotel’s Roman and Mediterranean roots and are characterised by attention to every detail to offer a unique experience of luxury and well-being.
Each suite enjoys a splendid view of Piazza Augusto Imperatore or Via della Frezza, with glimpses of classic Roman charm. The spacious bathrooms in the rooms feature marble coloured in four colour palettes, with mosaic rosettes evoking the splendour of Bulgari jewellery. The detail of the mosaic represents one of the most refined decorative elements of the architectural project: Friul Mosaic, a craft workshop in San Martino al Tagliamento (Pordenone), has created the 60 mosaic rosettes on the walls of the bathrooms in some of the rooms, which represent reproductions of three examples of high jewellery from the historical archives of the Roman maison. Each rosette also features the original logo of the exclusive boutique at Via Condotti 10. Even in the smallest detail, the Bulgari Hotel Roma aims to create a strong connection between its past and the expression of the contemporary Maison. In the Bulgari Suite, the wall coverings in the bathroom play on the rhombus motif, interpreted with travertine and black marquina tiles combined with calacatta and onyx on the walls. The sumptuous materials and rich textures are expressions of authentic luxury, in a combination of craftsmanship and charismatic style.

Friul Mosaic created the rosette pattern using the reverse method technique on paper, invented by a Friulian craftsman. In fact, the Friuli region boasts one of the most important mosaic traditions in Italy, especially in Spilimbergo, which has always been home to great mosaic and terrazzo artists who have exported their great skills and worked all over the world. It was here that a mosaic school was opened in 1922 that still trains young people from all over the world in this ancient art. All Friul Mosaic craftsmen come from the historic Friuli Mosaic School in Spilimbergo. They create the mosaic works entirely by hand with sartorial rigour and precision applied to each stage of the process. To create the rosettes for the Bulgari Hotel Roma, the mosaic craftsmen collaborated with the marble workers, using the marble slabs from the bathrooms to produce part of the tesserae so that inside the rosettes the design details would be the same colour as the marble used for the rest of the room.
Each mosaic tessera was made by breaking the various stones, one by one, on the classic wedge as per tradition: this process creates irregular shapes that the craftsmen combine together to give shape to the design, with a unique skill that differentiates handmade mosaics from industrially produced ones.
