Between light and panorama: the renovated attic in Faenza

In the heart of Faenza, on the fifth floor of a 1960s building, rises Attico Cavour, a 204-square-metre flat embraced by a panoramic terrace of over 200 square metres, offering a breathtaking view of the city, roofs, churches and bell towers, all the way to the hilly horizon of the Romagna lands.

A true architectural jewel signed by architect Alessandro Bucci, who has been able to capture the soul of this unique space and transform it into a place of life that develops both inside and outside, in a perfect combination of home and city.

The renovation project respected the existing volume and the external perimeter of the building, focusing on the architectural envelope. The aim was to create a fluid dialogue between interior and exterior, eliminating boundaries and opening the flat to the surrounding landscape.

The design plays on linearity and continuity between inside and outside. The windows, with very minimal frames, create a transparent all-glass backdrop that hides the metal profiles from view and opens up towards the landscape. The sunlight enters very naturally into the interior of the house and, in the evening hours, one can enjoy a sunset with an enchanting light.

The interior space has been completely reorganised and the restyling shows a fluid yet discoverable spatiality. The living room and the master bedroom are the magnetic rooms of the house, distant from each other but united by the large terrace. The interior is characterised by pure furnishings and a natural teak parquet floor that warms the rooms. Functional furnishings are incorporated into the architecture and it is the emptiness that gives rhythm to the ambience of the house. The elegance of marble can be found in the bathrooms, travertine for the master and grey veined stone for those of the guests.

The enchanting L-shaped terrace embracing the attic is nothing more than an extension of the interior. There is a barbecue area, a solarium area and a dining area, the latter protected by a cantilever roof that mitigates the sun coming from the south-west. The floating floor is made of teak slats and the parapets are made of glass: the sensation is that of being suspended between earth and sky. From every point in the house the gaze inevitably falls towards the outside, even from the secondary rooms, overlooking the terrace behind.

In addition to the aesthetic aspect, the project also took care of the building’s energy efficiency. The existing masonry has been insulated with a thermal coat or insulated interior walls, and the aluminium window frames are high-performance thermal break frames. In addition, photovoltaic panels have been installed on the roof to guarantee the building’s energy needs.
